How to Prepare for Your Salon Color or Highlight

Updated: Jul 14

Do you prep your hair before going to the salon to have your hair colored or bleached? If not, it is never too late to start! Your hair will thank you! Whether you are bleaching or just coloring your hair they both can be very drying to your hair, so it is especially important to replenish the moisture back into your hair. You can help your hair by prepping before going to the salon and after coming home. You will start to notice a difference in the condition of your hair long-term and the actual vibrancy of the color itself. We spend so much money to have the color performed so we should spend a little time and money keeping it looking healthy.

Do you use a masque on your hair regularly? If not, you really should! They make such a difference in the health of your hair. I will list a few different masques that you can choose from that work with different types of hair and situations. I would recommend using a masque on your hair about 1 week to 3 days before going to the salon for your color. This will help to replenish the hydration that your hair is missing from the roots to the tips! You may want to leave it on a little longer than usual just to give a little boost, I typically only leave my masques on my hair for about 3-5 minutes but before coloring, I would probably try to leave it on 5-10 minutes.

The evening before going to the salon you should shampoo, if you cannot the evening prior then you should shampoo the morning of. It is particularly important that you go into the salon with clean hair, free from build-up and product residue. A clean palette will lead to the best color results! Monat has a great shampoo that is a little clarifying but is not too harsh that would be perfect to use prior to your coloring, Black 2 in 1.

*Bonus tip! If you have Monat’s Rejuveniqe Oil, bring it with you to the salon and ask them to put a few drops into your color and mix it in. It will help your color last longer and help to keep your hair from drying out.

What about after your color or highlights are completed and you go home, now what? Be kind to your hair for a few days! It has been through a lot! If you can let it air dry and try to avoid hot tools. If you are not able to then please be sure to use a heat protectant. We have a great Air Dry Cream and Heat Protectant Spray! After coloring, you will want to do another masque treatment on your hair to help replenish any moisture that the color process took out of your hair. You can always use Monat’s Rejuveniqe Oil in place of a masque. Rejuveniqe Oil is a great treatment for your hair!

You should be good to go by now and have a great color or highlight to show off, not to mention healthy beautiful hair! Please let me know below if you give these suggestions a try and how they work out for you!
